What is Shop With A Cop?
Shop With A Cop is a way for Law
Enforcement Officers to give a great holiday to some children. It also another way of giving back to the community we care
so much about and do our best to protect.
Shop With A Cop consists of a number of
law enforcement agencies and officers who are dedicated to creating a
wonderful holiday experience for disadvantaged children in the Dane
County area. Through sponsors, the Town of Madison Police Department
is are able to have five Town of Madison
children shop at the East side Target with a $150 gift card.
Often a child will buy presents for everyone in the family, but have
to be coached by the officer to purchase a present of their own. It is
a very positive experience not only for the kids that are involved,
but also for the officers.
An officer, driving a marked Town of
Madison squad car, will pick up the child and drive them to the East
side Target store. Upon arriving at Target, the officer and
child will meet Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus as well as Bucky Badger.
The two will shop until the gift card is empty! The squad is
loaded with presents and they take a drive to the VFW on Lake Street
to wrap the presents and eat pizza. After the presents are
wrapped and everyone is full the officer and child head home with a
squad full of Christmas presents.
We joined Dane County's Shop With A Cop
program in 2004 with 4 children. This year (2007) we
sponsored 5 children.

How are the children picked?
Children are recommended for
participation in the program by police department members, school
employees, social agencies and our local JFF offices. Anyone can
nominate a child who meets the criteria of being between the ages of
six and eleven and who has a social or economic need. The child must
also be a resident of the Town of Madison and not have participated in
the past. Our Shop With A Cop coordinator makes the final
decision on the participating children.
What Town of Madison police officers
participate in this program?
Officer Jess Fischer is our 2007 and 2008
coordinator.
Officer Kurt Wege was the Town of Madison
2006 coordinator and continues to participate in the wonderful
program.
